Arthur J. Nam, M.D., Ph.D.

Arthur J. Nam is the Division Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Prisma Health University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He recently was at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center where he was the Director of Face Transplant Program.
Dr. Nam received his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and master’s degree in Physiology at The Johns Hopkins University. He received his MD degree from Sidney Kimmel Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and completed general surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center in DC, and research fellowship in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. He then completed the combined plastic surgery fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital / University of Maryland Medical Center, where upon completion he was invited to join the faculty at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Dr. Nam is board certified in both general surgery and plastic & reconstructive surgery, and his clinical interests include complex adult craniofacial trauma and reconstruction of secondary craniofacial deformities, in addition to using microsurgical techniques to reconstruct defects of head and neck, breast, chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities following traumatic injury or oncologic surgery.
His research interests mirror his clinical activities and is active in vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation (VCA) research. He is the recipient of the Young Investigator Award at the American Transplant Congress in 2009, and has published over 70 original peer-reviewed articles in basic and clinical sciences related to plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and transplant surgery.
